In your case, if it's 4 am you're being woken by the cold you could always pop it on a timer that comes on at 3:30 or something. I don't want to wake up one morning to realise I'm standing next to Jesus while he's trying to explain to me that I char-grilled myself in my sleep. For me, - it's hot water-bottles every time, - wrap it deep within your blankets and by morning it's still pleasantly warm and able to keep the chills out.
