Someone Got Lazy…

and ditched the plan to get a haircut yesterday because I just couldn’t stomach making the long drive in and out. I think I’ll ask for very short hair again. I usually can’t be bothered to comb my hair, even when I step out.

So, I’ve been poring over old photos—yep, it’s that time of the year again when someone goes into full melancholia mode and misses everyone back home. This photo was taken after my sixth grade graduation. It’s blurry and grainy—but this is not wholly the scanner’s fault hahaha! I forgot to fiddle with the settings first. WARNING: Three really old photos after the jump!

Doesn’t my aunt look pretty? She had boy hair back then yet still looked like the most fragile thing in the world. She’s the only person I know who can make acne and acne products seem like something you must have too because yes, she’s so pretty even pimples look good on her.

I look at this aunt, and I wonder how my mom looked when she was my age. I have trouble remembering, and the photos that I have of her were not her most recent. I remember she was tall and curvy, and everyone called her the beauty of their family. If she was prettier than this aunt, she must’av been very beautiful, indeed.

Oh, and this is me back when we lived in Ecoland, in Davao. As you can see, I’ve always been a glutton; and I’ve always had funky hair. That’s not even my birthday cake—that cake I’m attacking. But I digress. Someone should have kept my mom away from scissors. I wore these bangs up to the day my mom died.

Back in the day, mama forced me to join a lot of beauty contests. I sulked and griped every step of the way. Being barrio muse was never part of my plans, but becoming Bruce Lee sure was hahaha! I knew even back then I didn’t want beauty to figure much in my life. I wanted to be feared, not ooohed over and aaaahed. It amuses me now to see how confidently I held the microphone even back then. Who knew a microphone would be a fixture of this pale, freckled girl’s adult life?

Ah, old photos. How you soothe, how you hurt this fragile heart at equal turns!
