“Why’s your hair always short?” Alex asked me one day. The moms in the TV shows she watches have long hair that are either tied up in a chignon or left to hang loosely down their backs so I guess my perpetually short ‘do leaves her wondering.

It’s not that I dislike long hair. I’d love to have long hair. I just can’t be bothered to grow mine. My hair grows oh so slowly! I get tired waiting for it to catch up with my plans – it never does – so it’s off to the salon we go, my hair and I, for a quick trim every month or so.

If some people worry how to prevent hair loss, I worry over how to prevent haircuts. Whether self-inflicted or paid for, these haircuts are why I’ve always had the same hairstyle since 1990. But here’s the plan: I am going to grow my hair this year. No more haircuts, self-inflicted or otherwise. No more bangs, too. I don’t care that my hair grows turtle-slow. I will give it two years and after that, it’s hello perm. Yahoo!
