Goodbye, Circuit City
I’ve been avoiding the news, especially stories about the recession. But today, I read about Circuit City, and before I knew it, I was googling it like mad.
Circuit City was the second biggest electronics retailer for consumers in the U.S. When it folded on Jan. 16 this year, it left 34,000 unemployed. It’s not clear what would happen to the 765 dealer outlets and retail stores that Circuit City has in Canada; odds are, these would be sold as well.
I feel sad for Circuit City. I’ve never been pro-capitalism but I’ve grown up enough to appreciate its merits. Like it or not, we need big businesses like Circuit City’s because while they do take sales away from smaller shops, they also provide jobs and keep merchandise prices competitive. When Circuit City closed, it wasn’t just a store that died. It was a generation of shoppers, a way of shopping, and ultimately, some people’s hope that the economy would take a turn for the better.
Hi! My name is Chin, and this is where, to quote Jane Austen, I "run mad and as often as I choose."
