A Date with the Measuring Tape

This was how we spent Valentines: at home, with a scale tape, measuring what little furniture we own to make sure we won’t end up lugging anything that won’t fit the new apartment.

Alex had the time of her life rummaging through old toy chests and uncovering all sorts of suspicious-looking treasures. We told her she has to leave behind anything with a missing wheel, screw, or body part. Then she got bored, made off with my post-its, and proceeded to write The Great Big Book Of How To Defeat Evil Eggplants. She can’t write anything past L and the letter X but she’s good at pretending she’s a hot young novelist and gives a great monologue to boot.

Moving Out, Moving On

Moving isn’t easy but apartment hunting is even worse. We need space – tons of it; and in a city as congested as Cebu, space is pricey. The units that we like go for P15,000 to P20,000. Toss in two yayas into the equation, the baby’s upkeep (roughly the same as a newbie call center agent’s salary), Alex’s upkeep, utilities, groceries, and everything else and our living expense would amount to P50,000 at the very least. Obscene, yes? Yes.

But we can’t NOT move. Our P6,000-a-month little apartment is way too small for all of us now. We can’t move about without bumping into furniture or something equally huge like the crib, fridge, a truck (or its human equivalent, Wett).
