Lessons From Lola

My lola came for my birthday. She was a day late for the party, but it didn’t matter. She’s the present that keeps on giving. My lola is a genius. She raised 10 kids without a nanny’s help. That, while being provincial treasurer of Bohol! I learned many things from my lola, debt consolidation and balancing accounts included. From her, I learned the following:

1. Doing laundry can be fun if you don’t think of it as a chore.

2. Never explain. To those who don’t care about you, no explanation will ever sound right. To those who care about you, no explanation is necessary.

3. Organized closet = organized mind.

4. A girl should have a well-tailored suit in her wardrobe

5. A balanced meal is one that ends with chocolate.

Of course, she taught me so much more but we’d have to be pretty tight before I’ll let you in on them. :P

Lemonade, Anyone?

We’re back in the bustling metropolis and hating the flooding. Make no mistake; we love the rain but rain and flooding are two completely different things and “ne’er the twain shall they meet”.

On to happier news, the lovely Frances gave me an award – the Lemonade award. Of course, I’m star-struck (and I almost never am) because this woman is my only link to the world of Anna Wintour and the like; and she makes publishing sound like a dreamboat instead of the cutthroat industry many will have you believe it is.

This is the Lemonade Award.

I pass it on to anyone who happens to drop by this tiny space in the web. The award is for blogs that show great attitude or deep gratitude. Think of one thing you are grateful for (mine is patio furniture I can sit and read for hours in, so you see, it doesn’t have to be anything of substance whatsoever), then give yourself a pat in the back and this award.

The One Where Iris Gets Married And I Get Stuck With a Wonky Letter U

The older I get, the more I’m convinced I know very little about the ways of the world. For instance, I thought I could live without the letter U. Then my keyboard gives out on me; the letter U refuses to budge unless I hammer away at it with a finger, and now I’m convinced my career is over because this tiny part of the alphabet is throwing a bitchfit.

Then there’s Iris, and her wedding, and the fact that I always took for gospel her dramatic prediction that she might never get married. Well, what do you know? After a stint in Thailand and a hop to several countries, she traded I do’s (and spit, for better or worse) with Steve.

What to Get a Goddess/Geek?

Trust Iris not to do things like everyone else. Not only did she arrange her marriage at the same pace Oprah champions a new book, she did it single-handedly and while holding down a day job and running her own business! On top of that, she’s turning (space left empty to protect the author) in two days.

Naturally, I’m frantic. I don’t know what to get her for her birthday and her wedding. I thought of getting them a microwave (c’mon, what housebound elf couldn’t use one?) but she told me they have one already. Then, too, I remember that Iris and the fiance has wanderlust. When they’ve to cart my micro to another country, they’ll find themselves cussing instead of thanking me!

So maybe, just maybe, I’ll give that hard-to-shop-for woman flash memory instead. She’s a geek and she suffers separation anxiety when parted from her laptop. If there’s anyone who could use the gift of space, that’d be her!
