Lessons From Lola

My lola came for my birthday. She was a day late for the party, but it didn’t matter. She’s the present that keeps on giving. My lola is a genius. She raised 10 kids without a nanny’s help. That, while being provincial treasurer of Bohol! I learned many things from my lola, debt consolidation and balancing accounts included. From her, I learned the following:

1. Doing laundry can be fun if you don’t think of it as a chore.

2. Never explain. To those who don’t care about you, no explanation will ever sound right. To those who care about you, no explanation is necessary.

3. Organized closet = organized mind.

4. A girl should have a well-tailored suit in her wardrobe

5. A balanced meal is one that ends with chocolate.

Of course, she taught me so much more but we’d have to be pretty tight before I’ll let you in on them. :P

Wanted: Klutz Alarm

Sometimes, I think I need a wireless alarm not because there’s anything in our house worth stealing, but because I need something to bleep whenever I come close an inch of something potentially bruising. You see, I bruise often because the different parts of my anatomy come into contact with door jambs and sharp edges with pathological frequency. You can count on me getting a bruised shin weekly. Or, scratched legs. Or, bruised elbows. So yeah, any alarm that trips off and warns me to look out for anything bruise-inducing will surely add years to my life.

My name is Chin, and I’m a natural enemy of doorways, edges, and hard surfaces.

The Most Terrible Waffle This Side of the Planet

I’m a waffle girl. But no, it’s not because I love waffles… and yes I do! I could eat waffles every day for the next 10 years and not feel deprived! I’m a waffle girl because it takes me a long time to choose between two things and perhaps a lifetime to choose from several. Flat panel mount or a new television? Red stilettos or silver flats? Floral or monochromatic? I know it’s easy to make up one’s mind and make a choice, but not for me. I flop between choices and in the end, I waffled so horribly I chose a new television and ended up needing a flat panel mount for it! Go figure.

Candle Crazy

I’ve always been in love with scented candles.

Lighting one feels like performing an elaborate ritual, like a dance in an ancient ceremony. It fills my nose with the world’s most wonderful smells. Creamy vanilla with just a hint of chocolate makes me sleepy. Zingy lime with a dash of orange, grapefruit, Sicilian lemon, and Chinese may chang are for days when I feel like throwing the windows open to let the sunlight in (but of course, can’t because of the wind and the rain). The warm, spicy scent of figs that smell of the earth and crushed raspberry leaves are for nights when the hub and I feel like kicking our heels back and holding a “steak and wine plus movies” date. Finally, there’s Caribbean mint leaf, which we use almost every night to soothe frayed nerves and put us to sleep.

Aren’t scented candles lovely?

A candle for every mood, I wonder if Colonial Candle has that. I’ve been browsing the site non-stop because they have the prettiest candle holders and candle settings ever!

Don’t worry, babe. I’m only looking. How could I not? These candles are soooo pretty! Lookee!
