A Scanner and an Inkblot Test, That’s What

Alex has been writing a lot. You’d think, by the number of pads she goes through, that she’s writing letters to half the world population… or a quarter of all the bushmen in Africa. She pretends she’s writing stories when all she ever writes is the alphabet, over and over again.

Every now and then, she copies the words off my books, strings them together, and tells us she finally came up with a title for her book. Today, the story was Diwata Festival Undone. Yesterday, it was Globelines Lake Wogone Days. Who knows what she will be writing tomorrow? She makes hydrocephalic stick figures by the dozen and drawings of herself and her sister being chummy with cute little rats.

What to Get a Goddess/Geek?

Trust Iris not to do things like everyone else. Not only did she arrange her marriage at the same pace Oprah champions a new book, she did it single-handedly and while holding down a day job and running her own business! On top of that, she’s turning (space left empty to protect the author) in two days.

Naturally, I’m frantic. I don’t know what to get her for her birthday and her wedding. I thought of getting them a microwave (c’mon, what housebound elf couldn’t use one?) but she told me they have one already. Then, too, I remember that Iris and the fiance has wanderlust. When they’ve to cart my micro to another country, they’ll find themselves cussing instead of thanking me!

So maybe, just maybe, I’ll give that hard-to-shop-for woman flash memory instead. She’s a geek and she suffers separation anxiety when parted from her laptop. If there’s anyone who could use the gift of space, that’d be her!

Now that we live somewhere quiet and far from the madding crowd, I leave the house even more infrequently. Think once or twice a month, if at all! I like the laziness of it all and I love being able to work in my jammies or with nary a stitch on! Saves me the trouble of choosing what to wear. It also means less laundry for the help.

But I digress. The point of this post is really to commemorate the fact that I finally left the house for more than an hour and for non-grocery reasons. As filling as food is, I really need another reason to comb my hair and put nicer clothes on. Well, I found that reason yesterday. Yesterday, I had dinner with these lovelies.
